Mr. Siew Yew Ming read his law at Lincoln’s Inn London and was called to the English Bar in 1977 and to the Malaysian Bar in December 1978.

Working Experience

Mr. Siew worked in the firm of Messrs Shook Lin & Bok for one (1) year immediately after his call to the Malaysian Bar and subsequently joined the firm of Messrs Soo Thien Ming & Shahrizat in 1980.  He was appointed a full partner in Messrs Soo Thien Ming & Shahrizat in 1982 and remained so until he retired from that firm at the end of 1993 to take up his new position as one of the partners in the present firm.  In his more than forty seven (47) years of practice as a lawyer, he has gained extensive experience in the litigation, corporate and conveyancing fields.  Mr. Siew is also a Notary Public.

Litigation

He has wide experience and expertise, especially in banking and corporate litigation.  He has appeared at all levels of the judicial hierarchy up to the Federal Court of Malaysia.  He has appeared before the Federal Court on numerous occasions, many of which as leading counsel in particular cases in relation to land law, company and banking law.  Many of the cases in which he has appeared have been reported in the local law reports.  He has also been appointed by banks and corporate clients to appear for them to take up special points of law in cases relating to banking and corporate matters on appeals to the Federal Court.  Mr. Siew has also been retained by public listed companies to argue cases on Mareva injunctions, company takeovers and other corporate matters on their behalves.

Some of the cases in which he appeared before the Federal/Supreme Courts were authoritative cases on the specific laws involved therein for example Malayan United Finance Berhad v MUI Finance [1991] 1 CLJ (Rep) 292 which dealt with the non-applicability of the English doctrine of equity of redemption in the context of the National Land Code 1965. Kumpulan Sua Betong v Ezan Sdn Bhd and anor [1993] 3 CLJ 337 was the first case where the Supreme Court decided on the ambit of the amended provision of section 214A of the National Land Code 1965.

Corporate & Conveyancing

Mr. Siew has in-depth knowledge of this area of the law and has advised clients on numerous occasions on mergers and acquisition, corporate restructuring, joint ventures, shareholders agreement, etc.  He has also advised and assisted corporate clients on the listing of their companies onto the Main and Second Boards of The Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE). He has also advised various public listed companies on many of their corporate exercises which involve major acquisitions and disposals and restructuring exercises involving amounts in excess of hundreds of million ringgit. He was also instrumental recently in advising and concluding successfully on behalf of a few public listed companies in some cross border mergers and acquisitions, which were in the gaming, food and insurance industries. The amount in the transactions involved billions of Malaysian Ringgit. He has also travelled extensively abroad with clients to advise clients on the acquisition of companies abroad.

Mr. Siew has also advised banks and corporate clients in loan documentation for multi-million Ringgit loans, bond issues, and other capital market.

Mr. Siew has also been invited on many occasions to appear as a panel speaker in many international seminars on banking and corporate matters.
